Spent 20 years drawing lotus flowers on canvas. He was even given the nickname Viet Sun (Viet Lotus) due to his passion.


The lotus is one of the most well-known symbols of Buddhism. It is is one of the "Eight Auspicious Symbols" in the religion. The roots of a lotus flower extend into the mud and the stem grows up through the water and the flower blossoms above the surface. The stage of growth the lotus flower is in represents a different stage of enlightenment. The lotus is known to be associated with purity, spiritual awakening and faithfulness. A closed lotus flower represents the time before a Buddhist follower found Buddha or enlightenment. A lotus flower fully bloomed and open represents full enlightenment and self-awareness.

Painting the lotus flower in many different colors have come to be associated with different aspects of perfection. There are 4 different colors: pink, blue, red and white. Red represents the heart and its purity, the primitive state, sympathy, passion, love and other qualities. White is for spiritual perfection and complete mental purity. Pink is the color of Buddha and it is the highest lotus flower. Blue means wisdom, knowledge and victory over the senses.

The lotus has been a symbol of influence since aged period until today, from the ancient Egyptians and Indians, to the point of entire Asia. It blooms profusely in Buddhist art and literature.
