Biography
Tran Luu Hau is a Vietnamese artist born in 1928. He has had many gallery and museum exhibitions, and numerous works by the artist have been sold at international auctions, including at Christies, Sotheby’s, and other international auction houses.
1928 Born in Ninh Binh
1946 Member of the Resistance’s propaganda information Unit in Vinh Yen
1949 to 1953 Member of the “Resistance Class”, a group of 20 selected students in the Master Class of To Ngoc Van, the first director of the School of Fine Arts in Hanoi, the successor institution of the French L’Ecole des Beaux Arts d’Indochine (EBAI)
1954 to 1962 One of the first Vietnamese students to receive a scholarship at the Surikov Fine Arts Institute in Moscow
1962 to 1989 Faculty member at the Hanoi Fine Arts University (formerly School of Fine Arts in Hanoi and later Vietnam University of Fine Arts) where he taught art students for 28 years
1983 to 1989 Executive Committee Member and twice chairman of the Vietnam Fine Arts Association, supporting member artists in organizing exhibitions, and promoting the artists through awards and publications as well as in the selling of their works
1990 to 2020 Independent and free artist, reaching his “Glory days of creativity”, developing his truly distinctive style, often described as “abstract expressionism” or as he calls it, “Abstraction of Reality”, focus on acrylic and his “extreme passion for primitive colours: red, black, green, white and yellow”
